What is an Iron Infusion?
An intravenous (IV) iron infusion delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through a small needle in your hand or arm.

Most people start with iron tablets or liquid, but an infusion may be recommended if:

You need to boost iron levels quickly (e.g., before/after surgery, during pregnancy, to avoid blood transfusion)

Tablets or liquid cause side effects or can’t be taken

Your body doesn’t absorb iron well

You have chronic kidney disease or heart failure

Your Infusion Appointment
Before your infusion:

Your doctor will review your medical history

Tell your doctor if you:

Are pregnant or trying to conceive

Have high iron levels, liver issues, or haemochromatosis

Take any regular medications

During the procedure:

Sit in a comfortable chair /bed

Iron is given slowly via a vein (20–30 minutes)

You may eat, drink, read, or use your phone

Staff will monitor you at all times
After the procedure:

No special preparation or fasting is needed

You can usually drive and return to normal activities immediately

Rest if needed

Keep clinic contact details in case of questions or concerns
Helpful Tips for Your Visit

Bathroom use is allowed during the procedure

Eat and drink as normal before your visit
How Much Iron Will You Need?

Your doctor will recommend the amount based on your blood tests

Some people may need more than one infusion to restore healthy iron levels
Possible Side Effects
Common, mild, and temporary:

Headache

Metallic taste

Changes in blood pressure or pulse

Nausea or vomiting

Muscle or joint aches
Rare but serious:

Allergic reaction (can be life-threatening)

Skin staining (permanent brown mark) from iron leakage at needle site
Important:

Tell staff immediately if you notice burning, discomfort, redness, or swelling at the needle site

Symptoms may occur 1–2 days after infusion—contact your doctor promptly
How do you book with doctors at the Aspire Medical
You will need to make an initial appointment with one of our doctors to review you history and results. If you are eligible for an iron infusion, the doctor will provide a script which you need to purchase from pharmacy and bring on the day you are booked for the procedure. We do not provide iron infusions for pregnant women or children <14 years of age.
How much does it cost?
You need to pay MBS item fee + the Gap of $120. Our Front desk staff will assist you with reimbursement of MBS item code and rebate will come to your account on the spot.
